Choosing Your Topic

Teach beginner WordPress, website creation, copywriting, graphic design, self-publishing, painting, starting an online business, and lots more. The sky’s the limit, but you need to do some research to see what’s best for you.

Plan your topics before starting. This helps you create a roadmap of where course-creating efforts can go. Choose a topic you know a lot about and hopefully passionate about. If you have an existing site, then the topic needs to be an extension of that topic.

My preferred method is to look at your strengths, see which of those is in demand, and then see which of those you can afford to provide. Create a list of possible titles and look at platforms such as Udemy, Teachable, and Skillshare to see if those topics are in demand.

Choose Your Platform

There are several ways to create courses with Divi. The type you need will depend on the structure and style of your course. Courses can be prerecorded video, interactive, one-on-one, self-paced, etc.

For example, your courses could be a series of videos that students will watch and get a certificate at the end. They purchase the course, view the videos at their own pace, and don’t interact with other students. This is a simple platform that requires restricted content. It’s a good choice for mini-courses.

Or, you could have a complete learning management system with a series of lessons that include text and video, prerequisites, drip content, quizzes, live webinars, a discussion area, and more. This is a more complex platform but has the most potential. It’s a good choice for large courses.

We’ll look at what it takes to create both a simple course platform and a complete learning management system with Divi.

Simple Course Platform

The simplest method is to create your content as blog posts (or similar post types) and restrict the content to paying members. Several plugins can restrict the course content. Here are a few popular choices. There are a lot more in the WordPress depository.

Restrict Content

Restrict Content lets you restrict any content to paying members. It includes discount codes, reports, unlimited subscription packages, member management, member emails, data exporting, and payment gateway integrations. You can set free and paid membership levels.

WooCommerce Paid Courses

WooCommerce Paid Courses integrates with your WooCommerce platform to restrict course content to paying members. It requires WooCommerce, WooCommerce Subscriptions for recurring payments and free trials, and WooCommerce Memberships if you want a membership area.

WP Complete

WP Complete works with other course and membership plugins and lets students keep track of their progress. The free version lets students mark lessons as complete. The pro version tracks multiple courses and adds progress, graphs, lesson listings, previous/next, and a lot more.

Learning Management Systems

Learning Management Systems provide everything you need to create, present, and manage your courses within your Divi website. They’re more complex and require a lot of setup, but they provide a lot more tools. This is the route I recommend. Here are the most popular for WordPress. LifterLMS

LifterLMS is an expandable system with a course builder that lets you include multimedia lessons, quizzes, prerequisites, course tracks, assignments, downloads, discussion areas, multiple instructors, a student dashboard, forms, reviews, and more.

Accept one-time and recurring payments with multiple gateways, include bundles, coupons, upsells, affiliate programs, offline sales, preselling, order management, etc.

Provide certificates, badges, personal email, private coaching, text messaging, automatic enrollment, bulk enrollment, content restrictions, and lots more.

LearnDash

LearnDash is another popular LMS that includes a course builder, advanced quizzing, dynamic forums, drip content, course points, certificates, badges, and more. Create courses with any type of media. It works with multi-site.

Implement a shopping cart to sell your courses. Allow for one-time purchases, subscriptions, memberships, bundles, and course licenses to host courses by other instructors. This is a great choice for building a multi-instructor platform that will host their courses.

Management includes user profiles, email notifications, group management, reporting, assignment management, and access expiration.

Creating Course Content

Creating the content is where you’ll spend the most time. The content needs to be accurate, engaging, informative, and well-structured.

Start with an Outline

Creating an outline helps keep the course on track. This will show what each lesson will cover. The title for each lesson will be the primary points of the outline. Break the lesson into smaller points.

Each of these points can be a separate video (or text) or the points you want to cover in the main lesson. Try to make each section take around the same amount of time to keep the course balanced. Make sure the content is appropriate for the knowledge level of your ideal student.

Create the Material

Following your outline, create your content in either written form, video, or both. Slow down and be thorough. Don’t skip steps.

The more types of content the better. Video is often preferred but written can help for reference and it can be read within the lesson’s page, downloaded as a PDF, used for lesson handouts, or even turned into an e-book.

If you’re recording yourself on video, be sure to have good lighting, a quality camera, and a microphone that can be close to you so it’s not picking up sounds from the room. Keep the quality consistent.

Create assignments and quizzes that are appropriate for the content and level of difficulty of the course. If the course will have assignments, then you’ll need to grade the assignments and provide feedback.

Student communication can be handled through an area on your site or a private group. Facebook is a popular platform for private groups for courses.

Use your existing layout, a Divi child theme, or a Divi layout pack and create the course landing page and lesson pages. The types of courses you create and the plugins you use will determine the pages you need. Most course websites will need:

Divi LMS for LearnDash was designed for LearnDash for any type of online course. It includes multiple versions of course pages, lessons pages, topic pages, quiz pages, blog pages, and blog posts. It also includes profile, about, instructors, FAQ, login, privacy policy, terms and conditions, and more.

Learning Management

Learning Management is a layout pack available in Divi. It has 9 pages including course, courses, marketing, and pricing. It works great with any course or membership plugin and can be used for any type of course website.

Beta Test

Before going live with your course, be sure to beta test it with several students to work out any issues. Take their feedback and make changes as needed. Ask for testimonials to use in marketing.

Marketing

Now it’s time to promote your course. Create content around your course, such as blog posts, podcasts, videos, etc. Post your content on your blog and your social media platforms. Send newsletters and create ads for social networks and search engines.

Use the information from the landing page to describe what students will learn in your course. Be honest and don’t oversell it. Be sure to describe the knowledge-level of the ideal student. Also, be sure to upsell your students for your next course.
